LANDMARKS Peles Castle Sinaia Brasov council square Bran is marketed as Dracula's castle and Vlad Tepes almost certainly never lived there. Viscri, forty minutes away, is the more interesting stop.

LANDMARKS Clock Tower Covered Stairway Church on the Hill Citadel Ceausescu built it in the 1970s as a military crossing after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. It cost a great many lives and it is only open from about July to October.

Transylvania done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Nothing fancy about the beds, and nothing wrong with them either. The cooking was a genuine surprise — better than most places we'd have picked ourselves. Good value for what's included.

Questions people ask
No. Vlad Tepes may have passed through and was possibly briefly imprisoned nearby, but he never held it. Bram Stoker never visited Romania at all. Poenari, further south, is the fortress Vlad actually used.
