Check the altitude before you book the flight
Leh is at 3,500 m and you arrive there by aeroplane in an hour from sea level, which is the fastest ascent most people will ever make. Two full days doing nothing on arrival is the standard advice and it is not optional because you are on holiday rather than a trek.

Five and a half hours to cover ninety-six kilometres, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage railway climbing 1,600 m through a hundred and three tunnels. The road takes three hours. It is the reason to do this trip in this direction.
