Distances are short, the standing is long
Two or three hours mostly on your feet on hard ground. Comfortable shoes matter more than fitness.
The route is public space
Markets, lanes and places of worship are where people live and pray. Ask before photographing anyone and cover up where others do.

Tea, a fritter, an entry ticket. Card acceptance in old quarters is patchy at best.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Nothing fancy about the beds, and nothing wrong with them either. Food was plentiful and hot, which counts for a lot at altitude. Good value for what's included.

Questions people ask

Mid-January to mid-March, when several thousand North Atlantic humpbacks come into Samaná bay to calve. Outside those weeks the boats go to Los Haitises instead and both operators say which you are getting when you book. Approach rules are strict and enforced by observers on the boats.
