BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Distances are short, the standing is long
Two or three hours mostly on your feet on hard ground. Comfortable shoes matter more than fitness.
The route is public space
Markets, lanes and places of worship are where people live and pray. Ask before photographing anyone and cover up where others do.
Cash for the small things
Tea, a fritter, an entry ticket. Card acceptance in old quarters is patchy at best.
Ask what the group size will be
A walking tour of six and one of thirty are different products at the same price. It is a fair question.

North China done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Recommended.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. No hesitation recommending them.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones. Recommended.

Well paced over 9 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Would send friends their way.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. Food was plentiful and hot, which counts for a lot at altitude.

Appreciate the honest feedback; we're looking at the pacing on that section.

Hotels were a step below what I expected for the price. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing.

Questions people ask

Both, and that is the point of this itinerary. Mutianyu is restored, handrailed and genuinely enjoyable; Jinshanling is broken brick on a ridge two and a half hours out with almost nobody there. Doing only the first is the common mistake and doing only the second is a hard day with no context.
