BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
The jacket and the helmet are not optional
A licensed operator will not put you on the water without both, and neither will a river guide who intends to keep their licence. If anybody offers you a boat without them, that is the whole answer about that operator.
You do not need to be able to swim
A properly fitted life jacket floats you whether you can swim or not, which is why the age limit is a rule and swimming is not. What matters far more is staying calm in cold water for thirty seconds.
If you go in: feet first, on your back
Point your feet downstream so they take the rocks instead of your head, lie back, and hold on to your jacket. Do not try to stand up in moving water — a foot wedged between rocks is how people drown in rivers they could have floated down.
The guide's commands are not suggestions
Forward, back, get down, high side — these come a second or two before they matter and a raft only works if everyone moves together. Listen to the safety talk even if you have rafted before; the rapids differ.
Nothing to drink beforehand
Alcohol and cold fast water are a genuinely dangerous combination, and any operator worth booking will refuse you.

Instruction was patient — I came in nervous and finished wanting to book the next level. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing. Worth every rupee.

Kit was in good condition, which matters more than people realise. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down. Solid operator.

Appreciate the honest feedback; we're looking at the pacing on that section.

Boat was crowded. Fine for the diving, less fine for the surface intervals.

Conditions were poor for two of the days, which nobody can control, but the schedule wasn't adjusted. Crew were professional without being stiff about it.

Kit was in good condition, which matters more than people realise. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. Never went hungry, and the tea appeared exactly when it was needed. Would book with them again.

Kit was in good condition, which matters more than people realise. Rooms were basic in the best way — dry, warm, and right where we needed them.

Questions people ask

They are opposites. Rafting runs at low water, roughly August to January; Devil's Pool opens around August to January too, but the falls themselves are at their most spectacular at high water in March to May — when both rafting and the pool are closed. You cannot have everything on one trip.
