BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
The forecast decides the lesson, not the timetable
A beginner needs small, clean, waist-high surf. A good school will move or postpone rather than put you in the wrong conditions.
You will spend the first day paddling
Standing up comes later than people expect. Arms and shoulders are what ache afterwards.
Learn where the rip is before you paddle out
Every surf beach has one. It is the first thing the instructor should point at.
Reef cuts and sunburn are the usual injuries
Not sharks. Rash vest, reef-safe sunscreen, and ask about the bottom you are surfing over.

Conditions were poor for two of the days, which nobody can control, but the schedule wasn't adjusted. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it.

Boat was crowded. Fine for the diving, less fine for the surface intervals. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it.

Instruction was patient — I came in nervous and finished wanting to book the next level. No complaints about any of the hotels — all of them well placed. Meals were good throughout and the vegetarian options weren't an afterthought. No hesitation recommending them.

Questions people ask

Yes — it is a sand-bottomed beach break with a long gentle section, which is the safest thing to learn on. It is not a place to progress once you can surf; for that the east coast in season or Sri Lanka is better, and there is a Sri Lanka surf trip here.
