LANDMARKS The Islands Lighthouse reef Eel Garden The recreational route enters at the Bells and drifts along the wall at thirty metres. The Arch at fifty-six is technical, has killed a great many people, and is not what anyone here does.

LANDMARKS Blue Hole The Bells Memorial plaques The bands are iron and manganese in the sandstone. The route is run by Bedouin from the local tribe, which is both the arrangement and the point.

LANDMARKS Coloured Canyon Sandstone bands Bedouin camp It is cold at 2,285 m before dawn even in summer, and the last section is 750 rough stone steps. The monastery below has been continuously occupied since the sixth century.

LANDMARKS Dahab Masbat waterfront Shark and Yolanda are two walls and a cargo of scattered bathroom fittings from a wreck that slid off in 1980. It is a strange and excellent dive.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Nothing fancy about the beds, and nothing wrong with them either. The cooking was a genuine surprise — better than most places we'd have picked ourselves. Worth every rupee.
