Nine days up the Kali Gandaki to Lo Manthang. Six days to Jomsom, Kagbeni and Muktinath without the restricted-area permit or Lo Manthang.
Nine days up the deepest gorge in the world to a walled city that was a forbidden kingdom until 1992.

---
Phewa Lake
Lakeside
Annapurna range
The Kali Gandaki runs between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, both over eight thousand metres, and by that measure it is the deepest gorge on earth.
LANDMARKS
---
Kali Gandaki gorge
Tatopani
Marpha
Jomsom
Short mileage deliberately — this is the acclimatisation day. Muktinath is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and has 108 water spouts along its wall.
LANDMARKS

Muktinath
108 water spouts
Kagbeni

The permit is checked at Kagbeni and you cannot pass without it. The landscape north of it is Tibetan — red cliffs, no trees, and wind from noon.
LANDMARKS

Chele
Ghami
Dhakmar cliffs
Lo Manthang
Lo Manthang had its own king until Nepal abolished the monarchy in 2008. The cave complex at Chhoser is five storeys cut into a cliff.
LANDMARKS

The Kali Gandaki wind starts around eleven and blows hard up the valley every day. Riding south into it in the afternoon is genuinely difficult.

Marpha on the way down is an apple-growing Thakali village and the brandy is worth stopping for.
LANDMARKS

After six days of gorge road, three hours of tarmac feels like a different sport.

Route planning was the strong point — long days, but the stops were in the right places. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. Worth every rupee.
9 days of proper riding. The support vehicle was never far when someone needed it. Would send friends their way.
Machines were well maintained and the daily briefings were short and useful. Nothing fancy about the beds, and nothing wrong with them either. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones. No hesitation recommending them.
