Top Highlights

  • George TownSeven days between a food city and a hill station — the Malaysia the Borneo and Langkawi trips do not cover.
  • Clan jettiesThe clan jetties are stilt villages built by Chinese clans on the waterfront, each one a single surname, and people still live on them.
  • Hawker stallsPenang food is Hokkien, Malay, Tamil and Peranakan at once, and the good stalls have been at the same corner for three generations.
  • Ipoh old townThe British built the Camerons as a hill station because the lowlands were unbearable, and the tea estates went in from the 1920s.
  • Mossy forestThe mossy forest is stunted cloud forest hung with epiphytes and pitcher plants, and it is on a boardwalk because walking on it destroys it.
  • Robinson FallsThe Cameron trails are poorly marked and people do get lost on them — the numbered ones are walked with a guide for good reason.
  • Perak TongIpoh sits among limestone karst and the cave temples are cut into it.

Peninsular Malaysia done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. Plenty to eat and they were happy to work around a gluten allergy. Would send friends their way.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Plenty to eat and they were happy to work around a gluten allergy.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Crew were professional without being stiff about it.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Nothing fancy about the beds, and nothing wrong with them either. Solid operator.
