The carved doors are the thing to look at — Indian ones have brass spikes, Omani ones are square-framed, and you can date a house by its door.

Zanzibar was the largest slave market in East Africa into the 1870s, and the cathedral was deliberately built on the site with the altar where the whipping post stood.

“Coast and surf from guesthouses rather than resorts”
Surf coaching and coastal trips run out of village guesthouses. Two sessions a day, because one is not how anyone learns.
Kit was in good condition, which matters more than people realise. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. Solid operator.
Visibility was excellent and the boat ran on time every morning. Solid operator.
Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down. Worth every rupee.
Boat was crowded. Fine for the diving, less fine for the surface intervals. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing.
Thank you. We've taken the point about the transfer and are reviewing it.
Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Nothing fancy about the beds, and nothing wrong with them either. Simple food, well made, and enough of it. Would send friends their way.

The east coast has an enormous tidal range — the sea goes out roughly a kilometre twice a day, leaving a flat. It is why Paje is a kitesurfing centre and why Nungwi in the north, where the tide barely moves, is where people swim.
