BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Ride within the day, not the itinerary
Mountain roads in India are slower than any map suggests and the day ends early in the hills. Plan to arrive with daylight to spare; riding a Himalayan road after dark is the most dangerous thing on the whole trip.
Carry the paperwork
Licence, registration, insurance and photo ID, and on a border-adjacent circuit an inner-line permit as well. These are checked, and a checkpost is not a place to discover you are missing one.
Fuel is a planning problem
Pumps on high-altitude circuits can be two hundred kilometres apart and run dry. Know where the next one is before you leave the last one, and carry a spare canister where the route needs it.
Altitude affects the rider and the engine
You will feel thin air on a bike as much as on foot, and carburettors run rich. Take the acclimatisation days seriously even though you are sitting down.
Helmet, gloves, and something between you and the road
Gravel, water crossings and loose corners are the norm rather than the exception. Riding gear that would look excessive at home is about right here.

Route planning was the strong point — long days, but the stops were in the right places. No hesitation recommending them.

One of the bikes had problems from day two and the spare took a while to arrive.

Machines were well maintained and the daily briefings were short and useful. Good value for what's included.

Days were longer than advertised and we arrived after dark more than once. Crew were professional without being stiff about it.

Gorno-Badakhshan on two wheels is the way to see it. No complaints about the organisation.

7 days of proper riding. The support vehicle was never far when someone needed it. Worth every rupee.

Days were longer than advertised and we arrived after dark more than once. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones.

Questions people ask

Very. Between Khorog and Murghab there is no fuel, no phone signal for long stretches, no hospital and no hotels — you sleep in homestays. A breakdown without a backup vehicle is a serious situation, which is why both operators run one.
