Beijing Retreat
Hotel or lodge, twin sharing
9 days, planned by Meridian Overland
Nine days on the route almost everyone does first and this catalogue did not have — Beijing, two very different stretches of wall, and the terracotta army.

Forbidden City tickets are timed, capped daily and sold against a passport number about a week ahead. Turning up does not work.

Mutianyu is restored, has handrails and a toboggan run down. It is the easy wall and it is a legitimately good day.

Jinshanling is two and a half hours out and largely unrestored — loose brick, steep steps and almost nobody on it. This is the wall people mean.

Xi'an's Ming wall is fourteen kilometres round and complete, and you cycle it. It is the best-preserved city wall in China.

The emperor's tomb mound itself has never been excavated — the mercury readings in the soil match the rivers of mercury the histories describe.

The plank walk is bolted to a vertical face with a harness and it is optional and separately ticketed. The ridge without it is already a serious day.

“Europe and the far north on a fixed calendar”
North China done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Would send friends their way.
Well paced over 9 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Recommended.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you on another trip.
Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Good value for what's included.
Too much time on the coach and not enough at the places we'd come for. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing.
Appreciate the honest feedback; we're looking at the pacing on that section.
Well paced over 9 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Accommodation was a notch better than the price suggested. Simple food, well made, and enough of it. Would book with them again.
Well paced over 9 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Never went hungry, and the tea appeared exactly when it was needed.
Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Hotels were clean and central, which saved a lot of time. Solid operator.
Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Hotels were clean and central, which saved a lot of time. Meals were good throughout and the vegetarian options weren't an afterthought. Would book with them again.
Both, and that is the point of this itinerary. Mutianyu is restored, handrailed and genuinely enjoyable; Jinshanling is broken brick on a ridge two and a half hours out with almost nobody there. Doing only the first is the common mistake and doing only the second is a hard day with no context.
