BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Check the altitude before you book the flight
Leh is at 3,500 m and you arrive there by aeroplane in an hour from sea level, which is the fastest ascent most people will ever make. Two full days doing nothing on arrival is the standard advice and it is not optional because you are on holiday rather than a trek.
A holiday itinerary still has hard days in it
Pass crossings by road, long transfers and early starts are normal on these trips. Read the day plan rather than the brochure photograph.
Ask what the group size actually is
A group holiday is priced on filling a coach. It is a fair question and the answer changes the trip completely.
The places you pass through are lived in
Ask before photographing people and houses, take your shoes off where others do, and buy locally where you can. A holiday moves through more communities in a week than a trek does.

Well paced over 5 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Every night's lodge was a step up from what I'd braced for. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down. No hesitation recommending them.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. The teahouses were warm and the beds were fine after eight hours walking. No hesitation recommending them.

Well paced over 5 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down. Good value for what's included.

Sikkim done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Rooms were basic in the best way — dry, warm, and right where we needed them. Would book with them again.

Hotels were a step below what I expected for the price. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones.

Sikkim done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Meals were good throughout and the vegetarian options weren't an afterthought.

Questions people ask

Fairly. The Lachen and Lachung roads shut for landslides, snow and army movement several times a season, sometimes for days. Both operators will substitute the other valley where they can, but nobody can refund an army closure. Build a buffer day into your travel.
