Check the altitude before you book the flight
Leh is at 3,500 m and you arrive there by aeroplane in an hour from sea level, which is the fastest ascent most people will ever make. Two full days doing nothing on arrival is the standard advice and it is not optional because you are on holiday rather than a trek.

Pass crossings by road, long transfers and early starts are normal on these trips. Read the day plan rather than the brochure photograph.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Rooms were comfortable and the locations meant we could walk most evenings. The cooking was a genuine surprise — better than most places we'd have picked ourselves. Good value for what's included.

Questions people ask

The fjord roads involve long ferry queues and tunnel tolls, and the best sections — the Flam railway, the Naeroyfjord, the plateau crossing — are not roads at all. A car would cost more and see less.
