BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Check the altitude before you book the flight
Leh is at 3,500 m and you arrive there by aeroplane in an hour from sea level, which is the fastest ascent most people will ever make. Two full days doing nothing on arrival is the standard advice and it is not optional because you are on holiday rather than a trek.
A holiday itinerary still has hard days in it
Pass crossings by road, long transfers and early starts are normal on these trips. Read the day plan rather than the brochure photograph.
Ask what the group size actually is
A group holiday is priced on filling a coach. It is a fair question and the answer changes the trip completely.
The places you pass through are lived in
Ask before photographing people and houses, take your shoes off where others do, and buy locally where you can. A holiday moves through more communities in a week than a trek does.

Too much time on the coach and not enough at the places we'd come for. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones.

Punakha to Bumthang done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Meals were good throughout and the vegetarian options weren't an afterthought. Recommended.

Punakha to Bumthang done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Would send friends their way.

Hotels were a step below what I expected for the price.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing. Good value for what's included.

Questions people ask

Bhutan charges a per-person per-night fee on top of all trip costs — currently USD 100 a night for most nationalities, with a lower rate for Indian passport holders. It is included here and it is a large part of why Bhutan costs what it does.
