BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
The jacket and the helmet are not optional
A licensed operator will not put you on the water without both, and neither will a river guide who intends to keep their licence. If anybody offers you a boat without them, that is the whole answer about that operator.
You do not need to be able to swim
A properly fitted life jacket floats you whether you can swim or not, which is why the age limit is a rule and swimming is not. What matters far more is staying calm in cold water for thirty seconds.
If you go in: feet first, on your back
Point your feet downstream so they take the rocks instead of your head, lie back, and hold on to your jacket. Do not try to stand up in moving water — a foot wedged between rocks is how people drown in rivers they could have floated down.
The guide's commands are not suggestions
Forward, back, get down, high side — these come a second or two before they matter and a raft only works if everyone moves together. Listen to the safety talk even if you have rafted before; the rapids differ.
Nothing to drink beforehand
Alcohol and cold fast water are a genuinely dangerous combination, and any operator worth booking will refuse you.

About Acacia Line

Conservancy and park fees are in the headline price. Full-day drives with a packed lunch rather than two short ones broken by a hotel buffet.

Visibility was excellent and the boat ran on time every morning. Accommodation was a notch better than the price suggested.

Instruction was patient — I came in nervous and finished wanting to book the next level. Accommodation was a notch better than the price suggested. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it. Would book with them again.

Conditions were poor for two of the days, which nobody can control, but the schedule wasn't adjusted. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. No complaints about any of the hotels — all of them well placed. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it. Worth every rupee.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Hotels were clean and central, which saved a lot of time. Plenty to eat and they were happy to work around a gluten allergy. Worth every rupee.

Visibility was excellent and the boat ran on time every morning. Rooms were comfortable and the locations meant we could walk most evenings. Plenty to eat and they were happy to work around a gluten allergy. Would send friends their way.

Questions people ask

On this river, generally yes. The White Nile is warm, high-volume and the rapids are big but relatively free of the rock hazard that makes cold technical rivers dangerous. Every raft has a safety kayak alongside and there is a milder line on most rapids. Swimming is normal and expected.
