BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Distances are short, the standing is long
Two or three hours mostly on your feet on hard ground. Comfortable shoes matter more than fitness.
The route is public space
Markets, lanes and places of worship are where people live and pray. Ask before photographing anyone and cover up where others do.
Cash for the small things
Tea, a fritter, an entry ticket. Card acceptance in old quarters is patchy at best.
Ask what the group size will be
A walking tour of six and one of thirty are different products at the same price. It is a fair question.

Hispaniola done well. The itinerary had room to breathe.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Rooms were basic in the best way — dry, warm, and right where we needed them. Meals were good throughout and the vegetarian options weren't an afterthought.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Every night's lodge was a step up from what I'd braced for. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it. Solid operator.

Well paced over 9 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing. No hesitation recommending them.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. Never went hungry, and the tea appeared exactly when it was needed.

Questions people ask

Mid-January to mid-March, when several thousand North Atlantic humpbacks come into Samaná bay to calve. Outside those weeks the boats go to Los Haitises instead and both operators say which you are getting when you book. Approach rules are strict and enforced by observers on the boats.
