BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
The jacket and the helmet are not optional
A licensed operator will not put you on the water without both, and neither will a river guide who intends to keep their licence. If anybody offers you a boat without them, that is the whole answer about that operator.
You do not need to be able to swim
A properly fitted life jacket floats you whether you can swim or not, which is why the age limit is a rule and swimming is not. What matters far more is staying calm in cold water for thirty seconds.
If you go in: feet first, on your back
Point your feet downstream so they take the rocks instead of your head, lie back, and hold on to your jacket. Do not try to stand up in moving water — a foot wedged between rocks is how people drown in rivers they could have floated down.
The guide's commands are not suggestions
Forward, back, get down, high side — these come a second or two before they matter and a raft only works if everyone moves together. Listen to the safety talk even if you have rafted before; the rapids differ.
Nothing to drink beforehand
Alcohol and cold fast water are a genuinely dangerous combination, and any operator worth booking will refuse you.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Guides answered every question, including the daft ones. Would book with them again.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Accommodation was a notch better than the price suggested. Simple food, well made, and enough of it. Recommended.

Instruction was patient — I came in nervous and finished wanting to book the next level. No complaints about any of the hotels — all of them well placed. Plenty to eat and they were happy to work around a gluten allergy. Solid operator.

Conditions were poor for two of the days, which nobody can control, but the schedule wasn't adjusted.

Kit was in good condition, which matters more than people realise. No complaints about any of the hotels — all of them well placed. Crew were professional without being stiff about it. Recommended.

Great few days in the water. Briefings were clear and nobody was pushed beyond their level. Hotels were clean and central, which saved a lot of time. Never went hungry, and the tea appeared exactly when it was needed. Would send friends their way.

Questions people ask

Yes. Everyone wears a PFD and a helmet and the guides brief the swim position before you put in. People do come out of the raft on Roller Coaster and the safety kayaker is there for exactly that.
