Longyearbyen Lodge
Hotel or lodge, twin sharing
6 days, planned by Latitude Sixty
Six days in the high Arctic. The briefing is not a formality — there are more polar bears on Svalbard than people, and leaving the settlement without a rifle is illegal.
LANDMARKS
---
Longyearbyen
Svalbard Museum
Global Seed Vault
On snow it is a sled; in summer the same dogs pull wheeled carts. Either way you harness your own team, which takes longer than you expect.
LANDMARKS
---
Adventdalen
Husky kennels
Northern lights observatory
Pyramiden was emptied in 1998 and left as it stood — a swimming pool, a concert grand and the northernmost Lenin bust in the world.
LANDMARKS
---
Pyramiden
Lenin bust
Nordenskiöld glacier
The boat holds well back from the glacier face because calving throws waves. Bears are seen from the water regularly and never approached.
LANDMARKS
---
Tunabreen
Tempelfjorden
Walrus haul-outs
Bearded seals
About 400 people still live and mine here under a Russian state company, on Norwegian territory, under a treaty from 1920 that lets any signatory do it.
LANDMARKS
---
Barentsburg
Coal mine
Pomor museum
Longyearbyen flies to Tromsø and Oslo. There is no other way off the archipelago.

Hotel or lodge, twin sharing
5 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners across 6 days, at the lodges you sleep in. It opens with dinner on day 1 and closes with breakfast on day 6.
10 meal services named in the itinerary. Vegetarian and vegan covered; Jain, gluten-free and allergies on notice at booking
“Arctic and sub-Arctic, with the cold-weather kit provided”
A polar operator that issues the outer layers because the kit most visitors arrive with is not adequate, and pretending otherwise gets people hurt.
Excellent sightings and the guides clearly knew the area. Recommended.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you on another trip.
Excellent sightings and the guides clearly knew the area. No hesitation recommending them.
Early starts, but that's where the wildlife is. Well run. The teahouses were warm and the beds were fine after eight hours walking. Plenty to eat and they were happy to work around a gluten allergy. Recommended.
Svalbard was quieter than I expected and the camp was comfortable.
Svalbard was quieter than I expected and the camp was comfortable. Every night's lodge was a step up from what I'd braced for. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it. Worth every rupee.
Early starts, but that's where the wildlife is. Well run. The teahouses were warm and the beds were fine after eight hours walking. The cooking was a genuine surprise — better than most places we'd have picked ourselves. No hesitation recommending them.
Excellent sightings and the guides clearly knew the area. Good value for what's included.
Early starts, but that's where the wildlife is. Well run. Lodges along the way were simple and comfortable enough after a long day. Recommended.
Thanks for writing this up. We've passed your note to the team.
Often, from a boat, at distance. Nobody promises it and nobody should — and an operator that offers to get you closer is breaking the law as well as endangering you and the bear. The rules on approach distance are strict and the fines are severe.
