BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Check the altitude before you book the flight
Leh is at 3,500 m and you arrive there by aeroplane in an hour from sea level, which is the fastest ascent most people will ever make. Two full days doing nothing on arrival is the standard advice and it is not optional because you are on holiday rather than a trek.
A holiday itinerary still has hard days in it
Pass crossings by road, long transfers and early starts are normal on these trips. Read the day plan rather than the brochure photograph.
Ask what the group size actually is
A group holiday is priced on filling a coach. It is a fair question and the answer changes the trip completely.
The places you pass through are lived in
Ask before photographing people and houses, take your shoes off where others do, and buy locally where you can. A holiday moves through more communities in a week than a trek does.

Sri Lanka and South Male atoll done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. Simple food, well made, and enough of it.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down. Would send friends their way.

Sri Lanka and South Male atoll done well. The itinerary had room to breathe. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Meals were good throughout and the vegetarian options weren't an afterthought. Would send friends their way.

Everything was arranged properly — transfers, entries, all of it. Hostel nights are basic but clean, and that's what the price says. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing. Worth every rupee.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. The cooking was a genuine surprise — better than most places we'd have picked ourselves.

Well paced over 9 days with enough free time to not feel herded. Dorms were tidy and the common areas were where the group actually gelled. Worth every rupee.

Questions people ask

A resort night costs several times a guesthouse and the reefs are the same water. The trade is no alcohol, a dress code outside the bikini beach and simpler rooms. Both operators will quote a resort upgrade if you want one.
