BEFORE YOU GO · CAUTIONARY DETAILS
Test the internet before you commit to a month
The whole proposition rests on it, and mountain bandwidth is genuinely variable — good in the café, unusable in the room, gone in a storm. Ask for a speed test, ask about the backup connection, and book a short stay first.
Power cuts are the norm, not the exception
Himachal and Uttarakhand both cut regularly, and more in monsoon and winter. Find out whether there is an inverter and what it actually runs.
Altitude is real even when you are sitting down
Old Manali is around 2,000 m and Bir is 1,500 m. That is enough to disturb sleep and dehydrate you in the first week, and working through it makes both worse.
You are a resident, not a tourist
A month in a small village is different from a weekend. Learn the water schedule, sort your own rubbish, keep the noise down at night, and pay for things at local prices rather than negotiating them down.
Winter empties these places
Much of Old Manali and Bir closes between December and February — cafés, coworking, sometimes the road. Check what is actually open in the month you are booking.

Good mix of the obvious things and a few places we'd never have found. No complaints about any of the hotels — all of them well placed. Simple food, well made, and enough of it.

Well paced over 7 days with enough free time to not feel herded. The team read the group well and adjusted without making a thing of it. Would book with them again.

Appreciate the honest feedback; we're looking at the pacing on that section.

Too much time on the coach and not enough at the places we'd come for. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down.

Reply from The Monsoon Ledger

Thank you. We've taken the point about the transfer and are reviewing it.

Questions people ask

No, and that is the difference between this and a spa. The physician prescribes after an assessment, and some people are prescribed rest rather than the procedure they were hoping for.
