Riomaggiore Camp

6 days, planned by Old Mule Routes
Six days walking between five villages that had no road to them until the 1960s and still barely do.

Riomaggiore
Marina
Castello
The Via dell'Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola has been closed by rockfall far more often than it has been open. The high route is the walk.

Each village has a sanctuary on the hill above it, linked by a ridge path that gets a fraction of the coastal traffic and better views than any of it.

Seeing the five villages from the water is the one view the paths cannot give you, and Portovenere at the end is the sixth village nobody counts.

“Self-guided European walking with route notes and luggage transfer”
Route notes, GPX and a van that moves your bag. No leader on the hill, which suits some people and not others.
The route is beautiful and the pacing was sensible — nobody was rushed on the climb. Tents were warmer than expected and the camp was set up before we arrived. Whoever planned the days knew what they were doing. No hesitation recommending them.
Did this over 6 days and it was the best walking I've done in years. Would book with them again.
Did this over 6 days and it was the best walking I've done in years. Sleeping under canvas at that height is cold work and the kit was up to it. Solid operator.
Well organised from the pickup onwards. The daily distances were honest about what they'd be. Camp was pitched and the kitchen going by the time we walked in each evening. The lead was calm and knew when to slow the group down. Would send friends their way.
Second trek with this operator and they've kept the standard up. Good value for what's included.
Almost entirely. The four-city Italy trip here stops at the villages and moves between them by train, which is a good afternoon. This walks all five sections plus the sanctuary ridge, sleeps in four different villages, and is about five hours a day on steep stone steps. Different trip, different reason to come.
